Ranger's Apprentice The Early Years
Also written by John Flanagan, The Early Years is a prequel to the Ranger’s Apprentice books. Following Halt and Crowley when they were young, the two books in the prequel series lay the backdrop for what later becomes the Ranger’s Apprentice universe. Halt and Crowley are two friends determined to change the world. With Rangers scattered across the country, Halt and Crowley attempt to re-form the Ranger Corps to take on Morgarath and regain the trust of the kingdom.

Ranger's Apprentice: The Royal Ranger
Once you’ve got the backstory down, you can then move on to the spin-off series. Where The Early Years lays out what happened before the Ranger’s Apprentice books, The Royal Ranger tells what happened after. Following Will and his apprentice Maddie, the books tell the story of a new generation of Rangers. With plenty of action, suspense, and the return of some beloved characters, The Royal Ranger is a must-read for Ranger’s Apprentice fans.

Brotherband
Set in the same universe as Ranger’s Apprentice, the Brotherband series has a slight crossover with Ranger’s Apprentice, yet the characters and plotline are separate from the world of the Rangers. Instead of following the woodland heroes, these books follow the seafaring Skandians – loosely based on Vikings – the books centre around a group of boys who learn over an intense three-month period at sea to become a Brotherband.

The Inheritance Cycle
Similar to Ranger’s Apprentice, The Inheritance Cycle follows a young boy, Eragon, as he attempts to overthrow the power of an evil ruler named Galbatorix. Instead of Rangers, however, these books centre around Dragon Riders and the dragons that are their companions. Where Will Treaty has his horse Tug, Eragon has his dragon Saphira. Like Ranger’s Apprentice, the books are full of action that will suck you in straight from the beginning.

Artemis Fowl
Differing slightly from the other series on this list, Artemis Fowl is set in modern-day Ireland. While the books are meant to take place in the modern-day, fantasy elements are interspersed throughout. The book follows a boy named Artemis Fowl II, a child criminal mastermind, who hopes to exploit magical Fairy People to restore his family’s wealth. Throughout the series, Artemis’s values change and he evolves from a villain to an anti-villain.
