A superb idea, with a strong female lead, romance and a tense dilemma at its heart
Caroline Overington
The premise of Jane Austen time-travelling and having to choose between her books and real love is touching and resonant, charming and funny and tragic. And very clever
Posie Graeme-Evans
‘Artfully written and engaging, Jane in Love is a lively effusion of wit and humour.’
Graeme Simsion
Rachel Givney’s Jane in Love is everything I wanted it to be and more. It is a delightful modern-day reimagining of Jane Austen’s life, full of rich and nuanced characters. This wonderfully witty romantic comedy provides all the feelings we love and look for in a good romcom, with moments of blissful joy, moments of tears and ‘what if?’, and moments where you will laugh out loud. It’s one of those books that you finish and then want to shout about to everyone who will listen – and even those who won’t, offering a new side to Jane’s story, which we historically know is less than perfect. Jane Austen fans will recognise call-backs to her original works, but this book is written for everyone, if they are fans of Miss Austen or not. Time-travel has been worked into the plot seamlessly, making it seem not only seem possible, but also making us wish it were if it gives us a chance at a happily-ever-after. Givney has created a modern classic, with all the charm and wit we love about Austen in a gorgeous modern England setting. You’ll not be disappointed in this fun, delightful and completely entertaining read. I can only hope we get a movie one day!
Better Reading
Australian author Rachel Givney's offering wins points for originality... Jane In Love is a genuinely funny, feel-good read, encouraging readers to consider whether love truly does conquer all.
Sunday Times
Jane in Love is pure romp with the playful spirit of fanfic. Rachel Givney is a screenwriter with a highly developed understanding of plot structure and narrative drive, and there are some hilarious scenes as Jane comes to terms with electricity, internet technology, and flush toilets. In the end, she is faced — thanks to the relentless logic of time-travel — with a dilemma many female writers have encountered: a forced choice between art and love.
The Age
Jane in Love is not the type of book I would usually gravitate towards but I just had a good feeling about it. I was right. This book was a love letter to an author who never got to see how her writing changed the world. I adored the prose and the story!
The Word Degree
Givney’s portrayal of Austen is sensitive and sympathetic...This is a book for people who love Jane Austen and who are grateful that she stuck with writing her books instead of becoming a diligent nineteenth-century wife. Inevitably, there are some seriously lump-in-the-throat, tear-in-the-eye moments at the end and tissues may be required. An outstanding debut novel.
Good Reads
I adored this charming and funny tale of famous author Jane Austen who magically time travels to Bath, England in the year 2020 to find ‘love’. Jane’s perspective on her discovery of modern day life is often amusing...This is a cleverly constructed novel and it’s a light and easy read. Although I have never read a book by author Jane Austen, I really enjoyed this fictional story about her.
Good Reads
A romantic comedy for book lovers, and just in time for Valentine’s Day!
