Stories reimagined for the screen: these adaptations capture what readers loved about the original books while finding new ways to bring them to life.

Recent years have seen some of the best book adaptations ever made across film and television.

From faithful retellings to bold reinterpretations, the most successful fiction and non-fiction adaptations do more than mirror the plot. They capture the essence of the original books, using the possibilities of the medium to demonstrate the many ways stories can speak to us beyond the page.

While there are countless adaptations worthy of recognition, this list highlights some of the best adaptations of books, chosen for their storytelling, performances and lasting influence.

The 7 best book-to-screen adaptations

Mao’s Last Dancer (2009)

An adaptation of Li Cunxin's bestselling memoir Mao's Last Dancer. Directed by Bruce Beresford, the feature film follows Li's extraordinary journey from a poor village in Maoist China to international acclaim as a ballet dancer. Balancing personal ambition with questions of identity and family, it captures the sacrifices required to pursue a dream across cultures and continents.

The movie remains one of Australia's most acclaimed literary adaptations, bringing a remarkable true story to the screen with emotional depth and visual elegance.

The Help (2011)

Based on Kathryn Stockett's novel The Help and set in 1960s Mississippi, the story follows aspiring journalist Skeeter Phelan as she begins documenting the experiences of African-American domestic workers whose voices have long been ignored. What begins as a writing project becomes a powerful challenge to the social conventions of the time.

This film adaptation received multiple Academy Award nominations and won Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer. Its acclaimed performances and cultural impact made it one of the most widely discussed literary adaptations of its decade.

Daisy Jones & The Six (2023

Presented in a documentary-style format, the miniseries Daisy Jones & The Six traces the rise and fall of a fictional 1970s rock band whose creative brilliance is matched only by the tensions between its members. Adapted from Taylor Jenkins Reid's novel of the same name, at its heart is the complicated relationship between singer Daisy Jones and frontman Billy Dunne.

The series successfully translates the novel's distinctive oral-history format to the screen, supported by original music and strong performances. It also makes several changes to character arcs and timelines to enhance the drama and pacing for television.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North (2025)

Based on Richard Flanagan's Booker Prize-winning novel The Narrow Road to the Deep North, the television miniseries follows Australian surgeon Dorrigo Evans across several decades, from a formative love affair to his experiences as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway during the Second World War.

Capturing the historical scope and intimacy that made the original book such a landmark work of Australian literature, the series has been praised for its sensitive performances and production design.

People We Meet on Vacation (2026)

A romantic comedy film adapted from Emily Henry's bestselling novel People We Meet on Vacation. The story centres on Poppy and Alex, two unlikely best friends who have shared annual summer trips for years despite their very different personalities. When a period of silence threatens their friendship, one final holiday forces them to confront feelings they have long avoided.[Text Wrapping Break][Text Wrapping Break]This friends-to-lovers story translates naturally to the screen, preserving the humour and tension that made the novel so popular with its readers. This adaptation does have some key location and plot differences that are sure to keep fans on their toes.

Wuthering Heights (2026)

Few novels have inspired so many screen adaptations as Emily Brontë's masterpiece Wuthering Heights, and Emerald Fennell directs the latest retelling. Following the intense and destructive relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Yorkshire moors, Fennell takes significant creative liberties with the source material, streamlining characters and emphasising atmosphere and emotion over strict fidelity to the original novel.

The continued fascination with the novel speaks to its enduring influence and its ability to resonate across generations through fresh interpretations.

Classic literature continues to captivate audiences. If you're looking for more literary adaptations, explore our guide to the best adaptations of Jane Austen’s books

Project Hail Mary (2026)

Pre-production for the movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary began before Andy Weir's science-fiction novel was published. The story follows Ryland Grace, an American middle school teacher and former molecular biologist who awakens aboard a spacecraft with no memory of who he is or why he is there. As his memories return, he discovers that the fate of humanity rests on his ability to solve an unprecedented crisis.

The adaptation remains faithful to the story, particularly the friendship between Grace and the alien Rocky, with a more streamlined narrative and cinematic elements added.

What makes a good book adaptation?

The best book-to-screen adaptations understand what made the original story resonate while finding creative ways to bring it to a new medium. Some remain close to the source material, while others take a more distinctive approach, expanding characters or reworking elements of the story for the screen. Although every adaptation is different, the most successful often share several qualities that help them connect with both readers and viewing audiences.

They capture the spirit of the original story

Adaptations should preserve the themes, emotions and character dynamics that made readers fall in love with the book in the first place.

They balance faithfulness with creativity

A successful adaptation knows when to stay close to the source material and when to make thoughtful changes that suit film or television.

They bring characters to life

The talent of the actors can add new dimensions to familiar characters while remaining true to who they are on the page.

They make the most of the screen

Film and television offer storytelling tools that books do not. Music, cinematography, production design and special visual effects can all help create an experience that feels immersive and suspends disbelief.

They work for readers and newcomer

Leading adaptations reward existing fans while remaining accessible to audiences encountering the story for the first time.

They preserve the emotional heart of the story

Even when details change, the feelings at the centre of the narrative should remain recognisable.

They offer a fresh perspective

Some adaptations reveal new layers within a story, encouraging audiences to view familiar characters or themes in a different light.

They create memorable moments of their own

The most successful adaptations stand as achievements in their own right, creating lasting impressions while encouraging new fans to read the original book.
