Penguin Random House Australia celebrates huge milestone: 10 million Bluey books sold and counting!

Today, Penguin Random House Australia (PRH AU) celebrates an incredible milestone of over 10 million Bluey books sold across 100 titles in the book range available in Australia and New Zealand.

First published in November 2019, Bluey books have found a special place in the Australian children’s publishing industry. The inaugural Bluey book, The Beach, kickstarted what would become a phenomenally successful Bluey book publishing program. It made history by becoming the first picture book to win the coveted ‘Book of the Year’ at the Australian Book Industry Awards in 2020.

Impressively, there has been a Bluey book in the number one position in Nielsen BookScan’s official Australian bestseller charts for a total of 48 weeks. Bluey titles have appeared in the top 10 on 342 occasions, with Time to Play! spending an impressive 28 weeks in the chart.

In just a few short years, the Bluey book program has expanded into a growing library of titles in multiple formats from board books, picture books and chapter books, to sticker activity, colouring, craft, magnet, sound books as well as two cookbooks.

There are no signs of slowing down, with PRH AU recently releasing the 100th Bluey book titled Bluey: The Most Amazing Advent Calendar Book Collection which includes 24 mini books behind 24 festive doors, counting down to Christmas with story time magic and heaps of activities for little readers. This celebratory collection is a culmination of everything Bluey has come to mean to Australian families and fans around the world. From bedtime stories to holiday traditions, Bluey books continue to bring joy, heart and laughter to millions of readers.

Belinda Conners, Publishing and Campaigns Director at PRH AU, said '10 million Bluey books is a sales milestone we’re incredibly proud to reach. In November 2019, we were excited to launch the Bluey list with 3 titles before Christmas to meet demand created by the unprecedented success of the TV show. Here we are 6 years later with over 100 titles published in Australia and 10 million books in Australian households! This landmark achievement is a testament to our partnership with Ludo Studio and BBC Studios to create the best books, the support of our booksellers and readers, and the enduring popularity of the Bluey brand.'

Alongside the milestone of over 10 million Bluey books sold, PRH AU and BBC Studios ANZ have announced the renewal of their book publishing agreement for Bluey under a multi-year licensing deal. PRH AU became Bluey’s official book publisher for Australia and New Zealand in April 2019, and in September 2020 Penguin Random House was named ‘master publishing partner’ for the brand with Bluey books released in territories around the world.

Jacqui Shilson-Josling, Head of Licensing, BBC Studios ANZ, said 'Bluey’s success in publishing is a testament to the incredible connection the brand has with families and readers of all ages. Reaching 10 million books sold is an extraordinary milestone, and we’re thrilled to celebrate this achievement with our valued partners at Penguin Random House Australia and Ludo Studio. Together, we’ve built a publishing program that brings Bluey’s warmth, humour and heart into homes across Australia and New Zealand. With our renewed partnership, we look forward to continuing to delight fans with even more stories and experiences for years to come.'

Jessica Magro, Ludo Studio Publishing Producer, said 'The Bluey publishing journey has been unbelievably rewarding for Ludo Studio, starting with just three books in 2019 to releasing our 100th title in the same year as reaching the incredible milestone of 10 million books sold. It's a real pleasure bringing Bluey to life in print form alongside our outstanding teams at Penguin Random House Australia and BBC Studios ANZ, with a special thanks to creator Joe Brumm, our talented artists and our beloved fans of the show, who there'd be no books without.'

More books are planned in the Bluey publishing program to be released over the next few years, including a slide-and-play board book of Bluey: Keepy Uppy, a Mini Bluey book and plush toy set, and a deluxe comic-style hardback of The Sign – with many more titles to come. From glow-in-the-dark pages to lenticular dancing Grannies, puzzle books to sound books, there is a Bluey book for every age and stage.
