Penguin Random House AU (PRH AU) and United Book Distributors (UBD) employees set out to collect rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day 2024. Read all about our adventures and see photos of our clean-ups in action.
Since its launch in 1990, Clean Up Australia Day has become an annual tradition that rallies community groups, youth organisations, schools and businesses to tidy up their local areas. It's all about coming together to make a real difference for our environment.
Since Clean Up Australia Day first began, more than 20 million Aussies have rolled up their sleeves for this cause, and we're thrilled to say that PRH AU is right there with them!

PRH AU Melbourne office
Our Melbourne office clean-up attracted record attendance, with seventeen people from across departments taking part to clean up the banks of the Yarra River, and luckily, it was a beautiful day – not always guaranteed in Melbourne.
The team started at the boat sheds, collecting all sorts of rubbish from the waterfront including rowing gear, soft plastics, wine bottles and tins. Next, they ventured into the adjacent Alexandra Gardens.
The team was pleased to lend a hand to keep this vital waterway clean. The Yarra, which flows all the way to Port Phillip Bay, is home to a range of beautiful indigenous plants, animals, birds and fish. Some ducks were spotted, and with Bonnie Garmus in town they thought they might also spy her going for a row – but she must have gotten up a bit earlier than they did.
PRH AU Sydney office
Our Sydney team got lucky with a clear day for their clean-up at Berry Island Reserve parklands and coastal area.
They found glass, food wrappers, fragments of plastic, and even a Croc (which was stuck between the rocks) was collected!
Everyone put in a tremendous effort, and it was amazing to see so many departments coming together for the cause. After filling up their bags, the team enjoyed afternoon tea whilst sorting and documenting all the rubbish to send to Clean Up Australia.
