Sustainability at Penguin Random House Australia in 2023

See the targets that PRH achieved in 2023 and our plans for the future.

In 2023, sustainability was at the forefront of our business plans and operations at Penguin Random House Australia (PRH AU).

This year, we are proud to share that we have hit one of our big targets: achieving 100% renewable energy.

As of September 2023, we have run completely on renewable energy and are on track to achieve our goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2030.

Our efforts have not gone unnoticed, as PRH AU was named a finalist for the Net Zero Action Award at the NSW Sustainability Awards.

While we’ve now achieved 100% renewable energy, 100% sustainably sourced paper in our books, and 100% recycled and carbon-neutral print paper in our offices, we still have several goals we’ll continue to work towards on our sustainability journey.

We also continued our sustainability initiatives with the Penguin Foundation this year, and participated in a variety of projects led by our Green Team.

Read on to learn more about what we did this year and our goals for the future.

The Penguin Foundation

In 2023, we continued our partnership with the Penguin Foundation.

In addition to providing funding to the not-for-profit organisation, we also undertook new initiatives to help support the conservation of Little Penguins on Phillip Island.

This year, volunteers from PRH planted 1,600 trees on the island’s Summerland Peninsula to prevent future fires and protect the breeding and nesting environments of the penguins who live there.

We also published a book in partnership with the foundation. The Littlest Penguin tells the story of a few Little Penguins as they venture out to sea for the very first time. With gorgeous illustrations and a charming story, this book is a wonderful way for readers of all ages to learn about our namesake animals.
