Mismatched heroes and unlikely adventures.

There’s a reason classic story tropes like the ‘Odd Couple’ and the ‘Fish Out of Water’ get drawn and redrawn time and again: because they work. There’s so much joy to be extrapolated from unlikely partnerships between measured/neat/well-mannered So-and-So and reckless/messy/brash Whatchamacallit. Likewise, there’s much pleasure in watching on as a character flips, flaps and flops their way through unfamiliar situations. Here are some books full of unlikely match-ups and outrageous circumstances.

  • A story about the smallest insect and the deepest friendship from the author of THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY and THE MUSIC SHOP

  • A poignant, feel good debut about a man who gives a stranger a harp, and inadvertently gives them both a second chance at life... 'Uplifting and full of heart. I couldn’t put it down!’ JO THOMAS

  • The Secret Life of Shirley Sullivan is a charming, nostalgic and heartwarming story for women of any age – and it all begins when 79-year-old Shirley kidnaps her husband from his nursing home for one final adventure . . .

  • Maud is forgetful. She makes a cup of tea and doesn't remember to drink it. She goes to the shops and forgets why she went. Sometimes her home is unrecognizable - or her daughter Helen seems a total stranger.

  • A beautiful new Vintage Classics edition to celebrate the 15th anniversary of this wise, blackly funny, radically imaginative novel

  • The classic, bestselling dark and hilarious take on mankind's final judgement by two genre giants reached the small screen this spring in the Amazon Prime Original / BBC TV production - written by Neil Gaiman and with a brilliant all-star cast!

  • A wickedly observed novel about falling in love at the end of your life, by the Man Booker Prize-winning author of The Finkler Question

  • THE 2020 DEBUT NOVEL EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT. Our lives aren't always what we make them out to be. What would happen if we told the truth instead?

  • “The Amazing Race" meets Around the World in 80 Days as a woman desperate to save her family bookstore falls for her competition.
