Visionary Russian works that demand Penguin Pocket Classic status.

The second half of the 19th century was a golden age of Russian literature. Names like Tolstoy, Chekhov and Dostoevsky became known the world over – and still reverberate today. In the early 20th century the Russian Revolution brought about the Soviet era; and along with it the promise of universal literacy, and the realities of ideological censorship. Some artists and writers were supportive of the new regime, while others boldly (and at-times subversively) took aim at the State. Here we feature some of the Russian inclusions in the Penguin Pocket Classics range – visionary books that continue to demand readers’ attentions.
