A Blaze of Autumn SunshineThe Last Benn Diaries1991-2012

Thursday 5th July 2007 When my dad was my age, in 1958, just before he died, I took my two eldest boys to parliament to be with their grandfather. In a broadcast describing his political and family life for the BBC, my dad ended with these words, 'So you will understand that I live in a blaze of autumn sunshine.' I too am enjoying that autumn sunshine now with my grandchildren, and although I may never publish another volume of diaries, if I ever did, I think the best possible title would be just that: 'A Blaze of Autumn Sunshine.'

Tony Benn is the longest serving MP in the history of the Labour Party. He left Parliament in 2001, after more than half a century in the House of Commons, to devote more time to politics. ABlaze of Autumn Sunshine chronicles both the public and the personal events of the last decade of his life in Westminster and his 'retirement' thereafter. Covering the rise and fall of New Labour, Tony's tireless campaigning against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and his passionate commitment to encouraging public debate and demonstrations, this volume also gives us an insight into the difficulties of growing older, the devastating effect of his wife Caroline's death and his own failing health.

Praise for A Blaze of Autumn Sunshine

There is a new kind of freedom in his thoughts and in his writing.

Craig Brown, Mail on Sunday

This is a lovely book; warm, humane, genuinely revelatory and, on occasions, a touch surreal.

Rod Liddle, The Sunday Times

There is something amusing on almost every page of these diaries.

Daily Telegraph

The real Benn is with us still, but that friendly diarist's voice in one's ear has now fallen silent for good. It is an eerie foretaste of quite how much we will miss him when he's gone.

Guardian

And so the mighty torrent of words finally dries up… It is hard not to admire Benn’s determination to be true to his ideals… Tony Benn is not going gentle into that good night.

Sunday Times

A remarkable, charming and often very touching account of old age.
