Creative ideas for your egg hunt this Easter

Boost your Easter spirit by hiding books, chocolate and toys in eggs.

For many families, Easter is a thrill-filled weekend of chocolate, family, chaos and sugar-highs – with the peak of all events being a backyard Easter egg hunt with the kids. The more chocolate eggs that are hiding around the place, the longer they’ll be hunting for (hello, cup of tea). However, the more chocolate they eat, the wilder they’ll become!

Here are a few of our recommendations to lessen sugar consumption without crushing the fun.

Hide reusable eggs

Purchase plastic, fillable eggs from any craft store. These are great as they won’t be damaged in the rain or eaten by wildlife or pets if they don’t get found in the hunt! Plus, you can use them every year.

Fill the eggs with homemade vouchers

Kids can pop open the plastic eggs they’ve collected to discover special prizes – and the prizes do not have to be chocolate. Sure, chocolate can be a prize for a few of the eggs, but using this method allows you to control your child’s stash and remind them that Easter is about celebrating other things too.

Get creative with your vouchers and include things that you know your children will enjoy. Here are some examples:

  • A new Spot lift-the-flap book
  • A chocolate egg
  • A trip to visit the library
  • A plush Easter bunny toy
  • Stay up an extra 15 minutes after bedtime
  • A Bluey sticker book
  • Go get ice creams with dad
  • A trip to visit the local bookstore

It’s no surprise that we at Penguin Random House are a little biased towards using books as an Easter egg hunt prize! Here are some of our best Easter-themed books for 2023.
