About

Meet renowned author Anthony Hill as he introduces his brand new work of historical fiction - Captain Cook's Apprentice.

August 2018 marks the 250th anniversary of the Endeavour’s departure from England under its captain, Lieutenant James Cook. In celebration of this anniversary, Penguin Random House is publishing Captain Cook’s Apprentice, award-winning historical novelist Anthony Hill’s enthralling fictional recreation of one of the greatest voyages of discovery ever made.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Captain Cook’s Apprentice was inspired by the single reference in J C Beaglehole’s Life of Captain Cook, to a young fellow, Isaac Manley, only thirteen at the time they left in August 1768, who rose to become an Admiral, lived to be eighty-two and was the last survivor of the Endeavour crew. It is through the eyes of Isaac, as an eager cabin boy, that Anthony Hill tells the story of Cook’s landmark voyage.
Anthony Hill draws an exciting and enlightening tale of sheer adventure and discovery. Beauty and wonder sit side by side with the brutal realities of life at sea. As well as describing the major discoveries of the voyage, Hill weaves through his story the many words, animals and ideas that entered the English language and consciousness for the first time due to the Endeavour.
