The Wellbeing Imperative

How Thriving People Drive High Performance

How science, systems, and self-awareness combine to turn wellbeing into a driver of performance

Most organizations say they care about their people. Then they design work that systematically depletes them and call it high performance.

This book began when Ian Collins, a consultant who spent fifteen years helping organisations improve safety and performance, became his own case study. His collapse into burnout, and the recovery that followed, revealed what he had been watching across industries for years: workplaces that consume human energy rather than cultivate it, that reward endurance over awareness, and that treat exhaustion as commitment rather than the warning sign it is.

Drawing on neuroscience, behavioural science and the principles of Human and Organisational Performance (HOP), this book dismantles the assumption that wellbeing is something employees do to themselves while the organisation gets on with the 'real work'. It shows how chronic stress reshapes the brain, why blame-based cultures guarantee the errors they claim to prevent, and what changes when organisations stop bolting wellness programmes onto broken systems and start redesigning the systems themselves.

Through case studies from offshore platforms, control rooms, mine sites, hospitals and corporate environments, it introduces frameworks including the Six Drivers of Workplace Wellbeing, the Capacity Index for measuring what actually predicts performance, and strategies for building resilience at every level.

You cannot self-care your way out of a fundamentally broken system. This book is for leaders ready to stop managing the symptoms and start fixing the design. Because thriving people don't just feel better. They perform better. And the organizations that understand this will own the future.

About the author

Ian Collins

Ian Collins is a global consultant, educator and speaker at the intersection of human performance and workplace wellbeing. As the Founder and Managing Director of Wellbeing Daily, he has spent more than fifteen years helping organisations across high-risk and high-performance industries rethink the relationship between how people feel and how they perform. His work draws on deep expertise in Human and Organisational Performance (HOP), behavioural science and wellbeing design. From offshore platforms to boardrooms, Ian has partnered with leaders and frontline teams across energy, mining, shipping, construction, manufacturing, aviation and healthcare, helping them build workplaces where people can think clearly, act safely and perform sustainably. Ian's approach challenges the conventional separation of wellbeing and operations. He works with organisations to embed wellbeing into their systems, leadership practices and culture, treating it not as an HR initiative but as performance infrastructure. His consulting, training and diagnostic tools have been adopted by organisations across six continents. In 2018, Ian experienced his own collapse into burnout, a personal crisis that reshaped everything he believed about performance. That journey, from depletion to recovery to a fundamentally different way of working, inspired The Wellbeing Imperative. The book brings together science, systems thinking and lived experience to offer a practical guide for leaders ready to reimagine what sustainable high performance looks like. Ian is based in Singapore and continues to work with organisations worldwide, proving that thriving people drive safer, stronger and more successful businesses.
