About the author

Jordan Rondel

Jordan Rondel — aka The Caker — set up her cake-making business fresh from gaining a degree in marketing (www.thecaker.co.nz). Influenced by her French grandparents, her baking philosophy is simple: focus on fresh, yummy ingredients, with taste trumping appearance every time. The style is edgy over cute, and features nutritious and organic ingredients where possible. Her handmade cakes can be gluten-free, dairy-free or vegan. In setting up her business’s corporate base, Rondel used contacts from her long involvement in the fashion world, listing among her clients fashion designers, magazines, and fashion PR companies. Her collaborations with fashion labels such as Stolen Girlfriends Club and Lonely Hearts have fast made her the youth icon and media darling of the baking world.

Praise for The Caker

The observant among you will know that a few weeks back, the recipe for Jordan Rondel's moist honey and Earl Grey tea cake recipe was published here in Escape. Since then, I have been inundated by questions on what the rest of this young Auckland bakers' cookbook is like. The answer, in a word, is inspiring... this book brings together 50 of her favourite recipes. These are no ordinary cakes however, and lurking under their sometimes outrageous exteriors you'll find wholesome ingredients such as coconut oil and spelt flour. Rondel is a believer in organic, quality, nutritional ingredients wherever possible. She is also a strong believer in fun and this is obvious with some fabulous and original flavour combinations ... Rondel doesn't stop at cakes - there are friands, cookies, slices, puddings and more, with every page offering a wow moment - especially the one with the pinot noir chocolate cake. Resistance is futile. - Lisa Ineson, Sunday Star-Times

And what cakes they are. Made, as she states in her new book The Caker, to ''taste incredible. rather than look inedible", Rondel's honest approach to her culinary art puts all those outwardly frou-frou but bland inside cakes to shame. - Taste ,

If A cake could be a fashion statement then Jordan Rondel's creations would say "I am edgy but delicious". -- Dominion Post
