From the mountains of Lebanon to the suburbs of Australia, this beautiful debut novel explores the homes we inherit, the ones we build, and the people who shape us.

Younis leaves Melbourne determined to begin again. In the mountain town of Hammana, he buys an abandoned house and sets about restoring it with the assistance of his father, Basel.
As the house slowly takes shape, so too do the relationships that define Younis's life: the devotion of his father; his friendship with the young builder Fadi; the complicated love of a family divided by distance, memory and expectation; and the friendships that remind him that belonging is something made, not found.
Rich with humour, warmth and exquisite observation, Malachite explores what it means to inherit not only a place, but also the hopes of those who came before us. Through the lingering push and pull of diaspora, Malachite unpacks grief and the fragile ways we care for one another.
Malachite is a beautiful story of love – between fathers and sons, friends, family, and of the places that continue to call us home.

Praise for Malachite

Readers of Malachite will find themselves often craving a return to its delicate feast of words. Hourani's Proustian protagonist journeys us through the insecurities, delusions, and good intents of modern Arab diaspora without falling into self-essentialising tropes. It comes as no surprise that a great poet has produced a beautiful and precisely crafted novel weighing much heavier than its page count.
