Honesty

The Freedom to Live Life on Your Own Terms

A manifesto for the life-changing benefits of telling the truth, drawing on personal experience and expert voices to explain why the white lies you think are serving you are really holding you back.

We all lie. To our friends, our family, our colleagues and to ourselves. But what if we stopped?

Most of us grow up believing that lying is wrong. Yet research suggests we do it every day. We're afraid that complete honesty will hurt the people we love, cost us our jobs or leave us isolated and alone. But when award-winning writer Radhika Sanghani stopped lying, the opposite happened: her relationships deepened, her confidence grew and her life changed for the better.

Drawing on conversations with leading experts, including Kim Scott and Dr Anna Lembke, Sanghani explores how living honestly can improve our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. By letting go of people-pleasing, setting healthier boundaries and embracing honest communication, we can transform our relationships, our work and the way we see ourselves. Most importantly, she shows that honesty doesn't have to be brutal. There is always a way to tell the truth with kindness.

Insightful, practical and deeply empowering, this is a roadmap to living with greater courage, authenticity and fulfilment.

Praise for Honesty

Warm, wise and disarmingly honest, this book takes a deceptively simple idea and reveals just how deeply it shapes our relationships with ourselves and each other. Radhika Sanghani writes with humour, vulnerability and compassion about the small ways we abandon our own truth, and what might become possible when we stop. A thought-provoking invitation to know yourself more fully, and live accordingly.

A people pleaser's self-help guide of sorts, Honesty is a fascinating, thought-provoking look at the white lies we tell on a daily basis, and how telling the truth could make us calmer and happier. I'll be using some of the tips in the book to say 'no' with confidence more often, and to be more honest with myself, as well as with others.

Laura Price, author of Single Bald Female

What a brave, beautiful and liberating book! In Honesty, Radhika Sanghani tells of a radical experiment she created in her own life: What would happen if she stopped lying (yes, even well-meaning little lies!) and started telling the truth in all circumstances? With extraordinary vulnerability, rigorous research and a wonderfully curious mind, she explores the countless ways we hide our truth from others, and even from ourselves. What emerges is not merely a fascinating sociological investigation, but a profound spiritual inquiry into control, belonging, intimacy and freedom. This book challenged me, moved me, and has ultimately inspired me to ‘do a Radhika’ and examine ever more closely my own relationship with truth, and the big and little ways I still hide from it. Honesty is an invitation to live with greater courage, authenticity and love - and in this current climate of deception and fear, perhaps this is a more important subject than ever.

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love and All the Way to the River

So many of us learned to abandon our truth to feel loved, accepted or safe. Honesty invites us to reconnect with what we feel, need and want, reminding us that truth and kindness can coexist. Radhika Sanghani shows us how living honestly requires compassion, courage and a willingness to know ourselves and be known.
