Historias y poemas de una lucha de clases / Stories and Poems of a Class Struggle

“The revolutionary the dictatorship couldn’t kill, the trickster poet favored by the gods.” —Ben Ehrenreich, author of The Way to Spring: Life and Death in Palestine

Poems of revolution by one of Latin America’s most beloved poets

One of Latin America’s greatest poets, Roque Dalton was a revolutionary whose politics were inseparable from his art. Born in El Salvador in 1935, Dalton dedicated his life to fighting for social justice, while writing fierce, tender poems about his country and its people. In Poemas clandestinos / Stories and Poems of a Class Struggle, he explores oppression and resistance through the lens of five poetic personas, each with their own distinct voice. These poems show a country caught in the crosshairs of American imperialism, where the few rule the many and the many struggle to survive—and yet there is joy and even humor to be found here, as well as an abiding faith in humanity. In striking, immediate, exuberantly inventive language, Dalton captures the ethos of a people, as stirring now as when the book was first published nearly forty years ago. “I believe the world is beautiful,” he writes, “and that poetry, like bread, is for everyone.”

About the authors

Roque Dalton

Born in El Salvador in 1935, ROQUE DALTON was a poet, essayist, intellectual, and revolutionary. As a student at the University of San Salvador, he helped found the University Literary Circle, traveled to Soviet Russia, and joined the Salvadoran Communist Party. After he was arrested in 1959 and 1960 for inciting peasant revolts and sentenced to execution by firing squad, Dalton left for exile in Mexico, and then for post-revolutionary Cuba, where he received guerrilla training and where the majority of his works were published. A poet who brilliantly fused politics and art, Dalton’s work greatly influenced Central American literature. The author of eighteen volumes of poetry and prose, his book Taberna y otros lugares, a reflection on his time spent in Prague as a correspondent for the International Review, won the Casa de las Américas prize in 1969. In 1973, Dalton clandestinely returned to El Salvador to join the armed struggle. He was murdered on May 10, 1975, four days before turning forty. A bilingual reissue of his collection Stories and Poems of a Class Struggle / Historias y poemas de una lucha de clases was published by Seven Stories Press in 2023.
