Beyond the Edge of Light

Love knows no borders in this sweeping and heart-breaking WW2 historical fiction from debut author Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton.

Munich, 1938. As dark shadows gather at the fringe of the traditional Oktoberfest revelry, Julia Ormesby finds herself falling in love with Conrad von Echlau. Later, on the eve of war, they are forced to recognise that the weight of history leaves them little chance of a life together.

Julia moves from rescuing refugees to a pivotal role at Bletchley Park, while Conrad is awarded the Knight’s Cross for the capture of a crucial Allied stronghold on the Belgian border. When he is selected for a top secret mission on the Suffolk coast, their destinies collide once more. Immediately after Dunkirk, the nation is gripped by the fear of enemy invasion — so Churchill’s intelligence chiefs have decreed that every member of von Echlau’s incoming unit must die.

Epic in resonance, yet heartbreakingly intimate, Beyond the Edge of Light is a haunting debut novel of conflicting allegiances, the nature of honour, and the unbearable cost of loyalty in a world on fire.

About the authors

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton served for twenty years in the British army, first in the Irish Guards and later as a troop and squadron commander in the SAS. After that, he worked for a girls’ education charity in Iraq, Afghanistan and Mindanao, before starting a safety awareness training company for media and charity teams working in hostile environments and for young people travelling for the first time. For ten years, until 2014, he was the principal private secretary (advisor and chief of staff) to Princes William and Harry and, latterly, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. He divides his time now between the corporate sector and supporting charities focussed on veterans’ welfare, the promotion of teachers globally and the HALO Trust (mine clearance). He lives in his native East Suffolk with his wife, family and dogs. Beyond The Edge of Light is his first novel.

Praise for Beyond the Edge of Light

A truly spell-binding love story about love and war, told by someone who has lived and breathed it in real life.

Tom Newton Dunn

This is a startingly brilliant first novel. The writing is sublime and it is one hell of a story; tense, gripping and deeply emotional. One of the absolute must read books of the year.

Tom Bradby

Up there with the best of William Boyd and Sebastian Faulks. Gripping, transporting and deeply felt, this stunning novel will stay with you long after you turn the last page.

Lucy Foley

I raced through this fast-paced, deeply evocative story of extraordinary daring in terrifying times, totally immersed in the vividly and intimately depicted lives of star-crossed lovers caught up on opposing sides of a world-shattering war.

Katharine McMahon, bestselling author of THE ROSE OF SEBASTOPOL and THE CRIMSON ROOMS

A wonderfully vivid, immersive and enthralling portrayal of the conflict between love and loyalty at a time we must never forget.
