"As an Armenian, I don't see myself anywhere in contemporary Western kidlit. If before the war our community was talking about how we wish there were Armenian picture books, now we talk about this being an essential need. When our culture is under a very direct threat of physical destruction and cultural appropriation, books like Babo (and hopefully many more) are a way for us to see ourselves, to have our voices heard, and to preserve our culture.

While many diverse authors have moved on from simply telling stories about their traditions and culture, we are not nearly there. It's a literary desert that we must fill with our voices now, before someone destroys or appropriates into oblivion what we have been creating for centuries."
