Mohammad Awad is an award-winning Writer/Director/Poet/Playwright/Musician/Author/Mental Health Advocate and involuntary artist who’s running out of ways to express himself. Published in the anthology series Arab, Australian, Other, he is also one of the proud editors and authors of the Mental Health collection Admissions. Their first picture book, Floating by the Clouds, was published in 2026.
Mohammad’s first film Bikes premiered at the Sydney Opera House, their film Inheritance won the national Queer Screen Pitch-Off and had its world premiere at Mardi Gras Film Festival, where they won the Emerging Filmmaker Award. Its international premiere will be at the Iris Prize Film Festival. Their latest film, Flight Risk, premiered at Melbourne Queer Film Festival and won the MQFF Pitch Prize and. Their first feature, Ball and Chain, is in development with Invention Studios and supported by Screen NSW.
Honoured as Australia's National Youth Poetry Champion, they have also featured in the Sydney Writers Festival, Sydney Opera House, Sydney Mardi Gras and World Pride and the Art Gallery of NSW, as well as being featured on ABC and SBS. A development and reading of Mohammad's play Harami debuted at the Sydney Theatre Company in 2023. They are a recent alumnus of ATYP’s Fresh Ink program, Australia’s most competitive program for emerging playwrights.
