A Good Man on a Dark Night

A Novel

In New York Times bestselling author Flynn Berry’s gripping new thriller, an ordinary woman is ordered to spy on a suspected enemy of the state—or become one

A private nurse. A mysterious patient. A dangerous secret.

Every week, Eleanor commutes from her house in the countryside into Washington, DC, to visit her wealthy, powerful patients. On a warm spring morning, an officer from a shadowy security agency approaches her along the riverbank and orders her to inform on one of them, a foreign service officer named Anna.

Eleanor faces an impossible choice: Will she destroy another woman’s life, or her own? Anna is suspected of hiding a shocking secret, but she appears warm and trustworthy. Despite all Eleanor is risking, an unlikely friendship starts to form—and when she learns that her assignment is even more sinister than it seemed, their fates become dangerously entwined. Can Eleanor unravel the government’s plans before it’s too late?

A masterly new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of four acclaimed novels including the Reese’s Book Club pick Northern Spy, A Good Man on a Dark Night is both a riveting page-turner and a rich exploration of womanhood, friendship, and love in an era that threatens all three.

Praise for A Good Man on a Dark Night

Advance praise for A Good Man on a Dark Night:

“Thrillingly readable and terrifyingly plausible . . . Flynn Berry pens an Everywoman heroine to root for in a single mother and private nurse who must learn to navigate a terrifying new world of lies, rebellion, and murder before it claims her as its next victim.” —Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network and The Briar Club

“I recommend Flynn Berry’s books more often than any other writer on earth. I am perpetually searching for the next perfect literary mystery: one that combines immaculate prose and a hypnotic plot with a brilliant woman at its center. If Flynn wrote them fast enough (it’s a wonder she has already written so many of such stellar quality), I would read no one else. Her latest takes on the dark machinations of the state as they threaten a devoted single mother and I gulped it down in one day.” —Melissa Febos, national bestselling author of Girlhood and The Dry Season

“Surprising, beautifully written, and emotionally resonant, A Good Man on a Dark Night is Berry’s best yet. It’s both a chilling spy thriller and a rich portrait of one woman—a nurse, friend, and mother—fighting for her place in the world. I couldn’t put it down.” —Andrea Bartz, New York Times bestselling author of We Were Never Here and The Last Ferry Out

A Good Man on a Dark Night is such a good book! It sucked me into a world where reality battles with paranoia, where it's impossible to distinguish between friend and foe. The most frightening part? This could actually happen.” —Tess Gerritsen, author of The Martini Club series

Praise for Flynn Berry:

“Gripping . . . Ms. Berry is a lyrical writer who can set scenes both explosive and domestic.” —The Wall Street Journal about Trust Her

“Berry is a beautiful writer with a sophisticated, nuanced understanding of this most complicated of places.” —The New York Times Book Review about Northern Spy

“Flynn Berry shows a le Carré-like flair for making you wonder what’s really going on at any given moment.” —The Washington Post about Northern Spy

“If you love a mystery, then you’ll devour [Northern Spy] . . . I loved this thrill ride of a book.” —Reese Witherspoon
