The Lucky Sisters book club questions

A story about life, death and miracles, The Lucky Sisters will spark plenty of interesting conversation. Here are a few questions to get you started.

The Lucky Sisters by Rachael Johns has all the ingredients for a perfect book club pick: it’s gripping, it’s moving, it’s fast-paced and – perhaps most importantly – it’s full of big questions that will inspire deep conversations.

Adopted twins Nora and Stevie Lucky have always been close. When their mother dies, the two decide to search for their biological parents, only to come face-to-face with a revelation that will send each sister spiralling in opposite directions.

With their careers, love lives and even their sisterly bond at risk, they’re going to need more than luck to survive.

Discussion points and questions

  1. In what ways are Nora and Stevie lucky?
  2. Who was your favourite sister and why?
  3. Were you more on Nora’s side or Stevie’s side in the matter of wanting to find out about their birth parents, and why?
  4. What do you believe are the most important things in life?
  5. What would you do if you thought your days on earth might be limited? How would you live your life differently?
  6. Do you have a bucket list?
  7. Discuss the important role Santi and Felix play in helping the sisters reconcile. In what other ways do you think Santi and Felix are ‘good’ men?
  8. Do you understand why Cherry wouldn’t want to have children of her own?
  9. Have you ever done a DNA test? Did you find anything surprising?
  10. ‘This was the problem with being a twin. A bit like in a marriage, you always had to think of someone else.’ What other special challenges does the issue of being a twin raise in the novel?
  11. Although a very big clue is dropped in the first few chapters, were you still surprised by the ending?
  12. Do you believe in the afterlife?
