Robin Smith was born in Aparteid South Africa, but qualified to play for England on account of his English parents. Smith made his Test debut against West Indies in 1988 and notched up his first Test fifty in his very second Test. He continued to be a very prolific scorer and was renowned for his fearless batting against raw West Indian pace bowling and a majestic cut shot.
Smith's ODI career was also exceptional: a consistent performer throughout, with his standout performance being a record-breaking superb 167* against rivals Australia in 1993.
In retirement, he has settled in Perth, Western Australia, but he remains a club hero at his career-long county, Hampshire.
