Peter Bromhead is a well-known New Zealand cartoonist, newspaper columnist, author and illustrator of children’s books. He is also a director of businesses in the design sector.
Born in Portsmouth in the United Kingdom in 1933, Bromhead has lived in New Zealand since the mid-1950s. He has led a richly creative life, ranging from being an established artist through to being responsible for the interior design of many iconic buildings.
Best known for his cartoons in the Auckland Star, Bromhead now illustrates and writes for the New Zealand Herald and Herald on Sunday. He has written and illustrated a number of children’s books, including The Box That Wanted to Be a Ball, Twinkle’s Big Adventure and A Can of Worms. He has also written a spy thriller, The Disinformation Agent, released in 2015.
Bromhead has received numerous awards for his cartoons, including eleven Qantas and Canon journalism awards. He was awarded The Prince Hendrik Medal of Honour for services to the Danish design industry and has been a finalist in the Benson & Hedges Art Awards and the EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards. In 2000 he was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to journalism. A keen tennis player, Bromhead lives in Auckland with his wife and two young children.
