One of France's most distinguished men of letters Andre Maurois (1885-1967) was born in Elbeuf and educated at Rouen. Throughout his life he maintained close links with England and America and become an honourary D.Litt. of Oxford and an honourary K.B.E.
Although his interests ranged widely, it was in the field of biography that he achieved his most notable successes, and among the subjects of his stylish and perceptive studies were Disraeli, Byron, George Sand, Victor Hugo and Sir Alexander Fleming.
