Alan Connor is the author of 188 Words for Rain ("this lovely book" - The Times), Two Girls, One on Each Knee: The Puzzling, Playful World of the Crossword ("witty, charming, encyclopaedic and highly readable" - Spectator) and The Joy of Quiz ("An absolute delight" - Mail on Sunday). He has written official tie-in books for Jack Reacher, The Traitors, House of Games, Pointless and the Shipping Forecast. Alan is the Guardian's crossword editor and the Observer's crossword setter and has been puzzle consultant to Ludwig and Inside No 9. He has made quizzes for various TV shows and newspapers and written for comedy including Borat 2, BBC Film's The Rack Pack, A Young Doctor's Notebook (Jon Hamm and Daniel Radcliffe), Charlie Brooker's Wipe series and Have I Got News For You. He was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Nonfiction Program in 2025.
