How are books made?
The publishing process has many moving parts. From the moment an idea lands on a publisher’s desk to the day a reader opens the first page, a lot goes on behind the scenes to bring a book to life. Here’s how it all comes together.
Acquisition – finding the right books
First, the book’s journey begins with our publishers, who find and acquire manuscripts from agents, authors, and existing titles.
Editing – from draft to finished book
Next our editors will work closely with authors and publishers to shape, refine and polish the book to make it the best it can be.
Design & production – making it real
Designers are briefed to create a standout cover and give the book it’s look. We then create the physical the book, deciding it’s format, materials, finishes and printing.
Audio – bringing stories to life
Our in-house team works with authors and actors to record, edit, and produce audiobooks – including our audio exclusive stories.
Marketing & publicity – connecting books with readers
Now we can start building buzz. Our marketing & publicity teams help readers discover our books through creative campaigns, media coverage, events, and digital.
Sales & distribution – getting books into the hands of readers
Our sales teams work with retailers of all sizes to get books into shops, onto shelves and on screens. Our distribution centre then distributes our physical books across Australia and New Zealand.
Rights – selling further afield
When books are successful, we also get the opportunity to sell the rights into new territories, languages and editions.
Royalties – closing the loop
Finally, royalty payments connect book sales with author earnings.
