About

Mike Carlton and Scott Bevan in conversation

Mike Carlton, one of Australia's foremost naval historians, celebrates the history and achievements of Royal Australian Navy aviators throughout the twentieth century. From the fighter aces of World War I battling above the trenches of Europe, to aircrew serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, naval aviators played a vital role in some of the most significant conflicts of the modern era. Their service took them from the skies over France and the Arctic to aircraft carriers at sea and dangerous jungle landing zones under fire.

More than just the pilots, the story honours the observers, engineers, mechanics, aircraft maintainers and families who helped build the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm and its enduring traditions. Drawing heavily on the aviators’ own words, the book explores both the dangers of wartime operations and the risks of naval flying in peacetime, capturing the courage, skill and sacrifice of those who flew high in the “Burning Blue.”

Mike will be in conversation with Scott Bevan.
