About the authors

Gaston Leroux

Gaston Leroux, French journalist and writer of suspense fiction, was born in Paris in 1868. His experiences as a crime reporter and war correspondent for a French newspaper gave him the background to create his popular novels. He was one of the originators of the detective story, and his young fictional detective, Joseph Rouletabile, was the forerunner of many reporter-detective characters in modern fiction. Two of Leroux’s best-known mysteries are The Perfume of the Lady in Black and The Mystery of the Yellow Room, which is considered one of the finest “locked room” mysteries ever written. A second series of suspense adventures featured an old rascal named Cheri-Bibi. But Leroux’s most enduring work is, of course, The Phantom of the Opera, which was first published in 1910. Leroux died in Nice, France, in 1927.

Nancy Holder

Nancy Holder is the New York Times bestselling author of the Wicked series (with coauthor Debbie Viguié) and the Possessions series. She has written many novels and short stories set in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Hellboy, and Smallville universes. A four-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award from the Horror Writers Association, she is a former director of children’s ministries for her local United Methodist church. She lives in San Diego with her daughter, Belle, two cats, and Panda Monium Holder, a Cardigan Welsh Corgi.

LESLIE S. KLINGER is the two-time Edgar® winning editor of New Annotated Sherlock Holmes and Classic American Crime Fiction of the 1920s. He has also edited two anthologies of classic mysteries and, with Laurie R. King, five anthologies of stories inspired by the Sherlock Holmes Canon. Klinger is the series editor of Library of Congress Crime Classics, a partnership of the Library of Congress and Poisoned Pen Press/Sourcebooks. He is a former Chapter President of the SoCal Chapter of the Mystery Writers of America and lives in Malibu, California.
