Muriel and the Mystery

A little shrew encounters the unexpected in this charming picture book that explores change and the fear of the unknown. For fans of Little Witch Hazel and The Hidden World of Gnomes.

Muriel is having a perfectly ordinary day in the forest she knows by heart, when, while gathering snails in the underbrush, she encounters a mystery!

It's different from anything she's seen before, and it certainly doesn't belong in her well-ordered life. Though she tries to put it out of her mind, that becomes difficult when the mystery won't leave her alone. . .

Muriel will need to muster her courage to face the unknown and embrace the changes it brings to her forest. And maybe, just maybe, she will make a new friend along the way.

PRAISE FOR The Magic Cap, illustrated by Charlotte Parent:

  • CBC Best Canadian kids & teen books of 2023

"Reminiscent of Phoebe Wahl's Little Witch Hazel, this sweet tale sketches a believably enchanted world, and the whimsical details in Parent's pastel, folk-art-style illustrations can’t help but delight. Young readers will enjoy poring over the images to spot the tiny red caps hidden there while rooting for the siblings to save their precious hedgehog. This gentle adventure leads with kindness, a powerful magic in its own right." —STARRED REVIEW, Booklist

"In Messier’s classic-feeling tale, two white-presenting siblings hope it might cure their beloved pet hedgehog, Crispin. . . . This mix of fairy tale tropes and seek-and-find fun invites readers to lean into belief." —Publishers Weekly

"Illustrator Charlotte Parent welcomes children ages 3 to 6 to a forest realm that's as cozy and comfortable as a patchwork quilt in 'The Magic Cap,' a picture book by Mireille Messier that's full of satisfying seek-and-find opportunities. . . . A soothing story of kindness and cooperation." —Wall Street Journal
