Fran Knight, ReadPlus

Esteemed picture book creator Gabriel Evans returns in high form with this, one of his best works. A Friend for George accomplishes what every great picture book needs: a character of warmth, heart and relevance to the reader; subtle messages that strike emotional chords in minds and hearts of readers of any age; and gripping tension and excitement paced carefully through the story, which builds to a conclusion. Last-minute twists and surprises in the final pages squash any predictable ending we might assume is coming and the story thrills and grips with emotional tension until the concluding page, which induces happy tears. Thanks to the fresh, impeccable text alongside the colourful artwork of beach and ocean-scapes, Evans has created a seriously heart-warming and special book that tops the list of most beautiful stories of the year. Ideal for all children from the age of four and up.
