WHY PENGUIN RANDOM HOUSE ANZ?

Penguin Random House ANZ is one of Australia and New Zealand's most beloved publishers. We strive to be the best home for our authors and people, the most service-oriented partner for our customers, and to put readers at the centre of everything we do.

In addition to being the world's biggest trade publishing house, Penguin also boasts the greatest recognition amongst any publisher in the world.

The Penguin logo represents quality, passion, accessibility – and these values are not only reflected in the work we do, but also the working environment we foster.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

Random House was founded in 1927 by Americans Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer. Cerf is quoted as saying, "We just said we were going to publish a few books on the side at random," which suggested the name Random House. Random House expanded it’s operations to include Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia. In 1998 Bertelsmann AG acquired the US-based Random House and took the company global. The Random House Group comprised of six publishing companies with over 40 diverse and highly respected imprints and brand-name publishers.

Penguin Books was founded in the UK in 1935 by Allen Lane and his younger brothers, Richard and John. One day, Allen was returning from a visit to see Agatha Christie in Devon when he decided to buy something to read. After looking at the shelves at Exeter Railway Station, he was disappointed at the offerings. At that time, paperbacks were associated with pulp fiction and reprints of Victorian novels; high-quality fiction came in hardback form and cost the equivalent of a week’s wage. Lane was determined to produce high-quality books with soft covers (for sixpence a volume), and to make them widely available in stations and chain stores, ‘creating a democracy of reading from which civilisation has never looked back.’ Today, we carry on Lane’s legacy with our aim to foster high-quality, accessible literature for readers today – and for generations to come.

In 2013 these two publishing houses were merged by Bertelsmann and Pearson and Penguin Random House was born. In 2020 Bertelsmann acquired full ownership of Penguin Random House. Today, over 10 years after the merge Penguin Random House employs more than 10,000 people globally. With nearly 250 independent imprints and brands on five continents, Penguin Random House comprises adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction print and digital trade book publishing businesses in more than 20 countries worldwide, including the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, India, South Africa, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Portugal, and Uruguay.
