Frost Promotions

On reviewing how to enhance sales over the Christmas period we looked at a gift with purchase and what better way than adding a book. We approached Penguin and with their help selected a small range of books with corresponding products. The books offered have a high perceived value but are great value for money and the promotion was a huge success.

The Herald & Weekly Times Marketing team collaborated with the Penguin Corporate Sales department to come up with a unique concept; the taste.com.au mini cookbook collection.

Our readers appreciate fine food and enjoy seeking inspiration from celebrity chefs and cooks and with this key insight in mind HWT and Penguin collaboratively developed this concept.

The first taste.com.au mini cookbook collection launched in October 2010 containing ten abridged versions of cookbooks from popular Australian and overseas chefs and cooks in a mini format.  Our readers were offered exclusive, miniature versions of best-selling cookbooks from the likes of Jamie Oliver, Donna Hay and Stephanie Alexander and many more at an accessible price. The promotion provided long-term branding benefits for taste.com.au, our regular newspaper feature and digital food hub, and significantly increased sales of the Herald Sun across the 10 day campaign.

Due to this success in October 2011 we ran a second series of the taste.com.au mini cookbooks including more high profile chefs such as George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan.  In addition to this, our sister metropolitan newspapers around the country in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania have taken up this concept in their respective markets, with success. An unexpected reward and recognition of the campaign has been the nomination of the taste.com.au mini cookbook collection for finals of the International Newspaper Marketing Awards at the World Congress in Los Angeles in 2012.

The Penguin team are a delight to work with and understand the need to manage projects on brief, on time and to budget and deliver innovative design and high quality products for our customers.

"When we were briefed by the Nutricia Karicare Toddler formula team for a quick-to-market, gift with purchase style promotion in pharmacies nationwide, we felt that Penguin Books would be a perfect fit.

A key requirement for the gift with purchase premium was that it held a high perceived value for Nutricia’s consumers, and could also be produced and distributed nationally within just a few weeks of the initial project briefing.

Working with Penguin, we were able to secure four titles from the Puffin Baby Book series for the promotion. Furthermore, Nutricia logo stickers were also produced by Penguin and attached to the front cover of each book. This ensured ongoing branding for Nutricia Karicare Toddler formula in each claimant’s home.

The promotion was a huge success for Nutricia leading to fantastic sales results during the promotional period. It was also awarded both a Gold and Silver trophy at the 2008 Australasian Promotional Marketing Association Star Awards. Working with the Penguin team was a pleasure.
