SEARCH TIPS

If you cannot find a specific book, but you are sure that you have the details correct:

HOW TO SEARCH

Title

Search for a particular title. Use part-words, a word or words, in any order. (At least 3 letters are required. Do not use wildcards.)

Author

Search for books by an author, illustrator, photographer, etc. Enter the first name, surname or both, in any order. (At least 3 letters are required. Do not use wildcards.)

ISBN

Search by the International Standard Book Number. Enter the full 10 or 13 digit number for an exact match. (Do not use spaces or dashes to separate the digits.

Keyword

Search by ISBN, title or author. Use part-words, a word or words, in any order. (At least 3 letters are required. Do not use wildcards.)

Media

Limit results to a particular medium. 'Miscellaneous' includes maps, stationery, games, posters, toys, etc.

  1. To search simply enter data or make a selection in one of the above fields; if desired you can use Advanced Search to refine your search further by using a combination of fields. The more information you enter the more specific your results will be.

  2. Do not use 'wildcard' characters.

  3. Searches are case insensitive: you can use lowercase or capital letters or a combination of both.

  4. Separate multiple words with spaces; you do not need to use commas or dashes.

  5. Partial words are automatically truncated - that is, the search will find instances of your string of letters at the beginning of whole words. For example, if you enter 'read' as a title the results will include 'reader', 'reading', 'ready' and so on, in addition to all instances of 'read'.

  6. Various 'stop-words' are not recognized by the search engine. If you enter words such as 'a', 'the', 'by', 'and', 'not' and so on, these will be ignored when your search request is processed.

  7. Error messages asking you to 'try again' may appear if you -
    • Hit the search button without entering information or making a selection.
    • Enter an unrecognised word or a 'stop-word'.

  8. If only one title matches your search request you will immediately view the Title Details page which provides full information on that item. Alternatively, if more than one title matches your request you will see a Summary Results interim page; select items from this list to view full Title Details. The Summary Results list is ordered alphabetically by title, but you can re-order this list alphabetically by author name, or by date of publication from most to least recent.
