The White Woman on the Green Bicycle
Author:
Monique Roffey
An unforgettable love story, brimming with passion and politics, set over fifty years in Trinidad – a place at times enchanting, and at times highly dangerous . . .
When George and Sabine Harwood arrive in Trinidad from England as young newlyweds, they have with them just a couple of suitcases and Sabine's prized green bicycle. Their intention is to stay for not more then three years, but George falls in love with the island. Sabine, however, is ill at ease with the racial segregation and unrest in her new home, and takes solace in the freedom of her green bicycle.
George and Sabine become more entangled in their life on the island – in all its passion and betrayals – and Sabine's bicycle takes her places she wouldn't otherwise go. One day George make a discovery that forces him to realise that extent of the secrets between them, and is seized by an urgent, desperate need to prove his love for her – with tragic consequences.
'Boundless in its understanding of the human spirit . . . will resonate with readers everywhere.'
Olive Senior, poet, writer and Caribbean woman of letters
'Monique Roffey is a writer of verve, vibrancy and compassion . . . a joy to read.'
Sarah Hall, author of The Electric Michelangelo, shortlisted for the 2004 Man Booker Prize

Your CommentsOn behalf of my reading group Scrolls, I'd like to thank you for the recent copy you sent of Closed For Winter by Georgia Blain, along with enough complimentary double passes for the entire group to see the movie. I'm happy to report that the group was absolutely thrilled with your generosity, and are making great use of the tickets. Personally speaking, my husband and I were fortunate enough to catch a screening at the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park, and were blown away by the evocative film. It certainly tackles a difficult subject with delicacy and intelligence. Having seen the film I then read the book - and it was a wonderful read. Not because of the nightmare subject matter, but because you actually became part of Elise's world, turned upside down when her sister vanished on the beach all those years before. It was an excellent read, and I'm passing it around the group at the next meeting. All are keen to read it. Once again, thankyou so much for Penguin's generosity and community spirit. I look forward to more book club offers in the future! - Malvina from Scrolls. |
