She has just been made leader of the boarders by the secret society of students that have run the school, unofficially, for the last twenty years. Taylor is a reluctant leader – she is not particularly community-minded, preferring to escape at every opportunity to the unfinished house on the edge of the school where her house mistress, Hannah, lives. Hannah has been like a surrogate parent to Taylor ever since she was abandoned by her mother on the Jellicoe Road six years before.
