VATE 2001: 'Temper Democratic, Bias Offensively Australian'?
The 2001 VATE Conference was this year held at RMIT’s Storey Hall to
coincide with Federation celebrations taking place in Melbourne at the
time. All reports are that the conference was extremely successful,
and these photographs of the Penguin and Pearson stand certainly confirm
that!
Penguin were represented at the conference by a number of Penguin and
University of Queensland Press (UQP) authors, including Nick Earls,
Phillip Gwynne, Maureen McCarthy, Archie Fusillo, James Moloney, Isobelle
Carmody, Catherine Bateson and Brian Caswell.
Kristin Gill and Bronwyn Owen from the Education Sales and Marketing
division of Penguin Books held two conference sessions based around
selecting new novels for the classroom. Both were very well attended,
and delegates took away lots of useful information to help them in making
their novel selection decisions for 2002.
For those of you who missed the session, please contact Bronwyn
Owen to arrange a time to discuss novel selection.
VATE 2000: How 'English' Is It?
At La Trobe University in July, over 900 educators gathered for the
annual VATE (Victorian Association for the Teaching of English) Conference,
and it was without a doubt one of the most successful conferences we
have attended. Penguin Books had a terrific display and met many teachers
over the two days.
