Corporate Social Responsibility

The idea of ‘corporate responsibility’ or ‘corporate citizenship’ isn’t new to any part of the Penguin Group. When asked what he was most proud of, Penguin founder Allen Lane said: “The fact that we are regarded as possibly the greatest popular educators in our generation.” It’s this ethos which has been at the core of Penguin’s business for the last 75 years.

Charitable Initiatives

At Penguin Australia we believe every child has the right to literacy and learning. We strongly support those charities who give disadvantaged children the opportunity of education, which they may not otherwise have. Our decade-plus involvement with The Smith Family is just one example of our commitment to assist in providing every Australian child the opportunity to learn. We also support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation which provides books and educational material to remote communities, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library which delivers one free age-appropriate book per month directly to children from birth to five years old living in disadvantaged communities, and We Give Books, a Pearson Foundation initiative.

Penguin Australia is also proud to support our charity partners The McGrath Foundation raising funds through the sale of the Pink Popular Penguin titles to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia, and Movember raising funds through the sale of the limited edition Mr Men title, Mr Mo, to support prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health initiatives.

Environmental Initiatives

Through Penguin’s environmental initiatives, we have been working towards a greener business since 2007. We're committed to minimising the environmental impact of our operations and our products through adopting the principle of continuous improvement in environmental performance. Our initiatives aim to:

  • Reduce our consumption of energy, water and other material resources.
  • Reduce and control pollution and emissions.
  • Manage waste generated from our business operations.
  • Monitor & audit environmental performance in order to improve targets on a regular basis.

Standards

  • As a minimum, we comply with relevant environmental laws and regulations.
  • We consider environmental responsibility as a factor in our decision-making.
  • We work with regulatory agencies, advisers, auditors and other interested parties as necessary in the implementation of effective environmental policies. Where no regulations exist, we set our own guidelines.
  • We maintain an environmental management system, review impacts, set targets and report on performance.

Carbon management

  • We have made a strategic commitment to be a climate neutral company for those aspects under our direct control. As part of this commitment we invest in carbon management including a consideration of our environmental impact as an integral element of investment decision-making. Carbon abatement is a priority for us.
  • We consider opportunities for direct investment in renewable energy production at our sites. We also assess opportunities to take up green energy options.
  • We monitor the energy and water used in our office buildings and distribution centres and set realistic targets to manage their use.
  • We monitor our business travel and offer alternatives such as teleconferencing and videoconferencing.

Resource use

  • We adopt effective procedures to minimise waste production and to promote the recycling of unused product and packaging.
  • We expect our suppliers to work with us in meeting our environmental objectives. For our key suppliers of goods and services, environmental requirements are an integral part of new contracts and contract reviews.
  • We design and plan new facilities, refurbishments and internal moves to legislative and other standards that will minimise use of construction resources and improve environmental performance.
  • We encourage our people to contribute to the development of environmental initiatives through joining our Green Champions teams or providing feedback to the Sustainability Officer or any members of the Environmental Management Review team.

We also have an ongoing partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) and through our Green Committee support the various initiatives throughout the year including World Environment Day and Earth Hour.
